The meaning of Bar Mitzvah - Bat Mitzvah?

An important land mark for the young Jewish boy is the Bar Mitzvah and for the Jewish girl the Bat Mitzvah. Bar Mitzvah is celebrated when the boy reaches his thirteenth birthday, while the Bat Mitzvah is celebrated at the age of twelve. The literal meaning of Bar/Bat Mitzvah is "commandment age" or “age of maturity”, hence the time in life where the boy or girl becomes an adult in the Jewish tradition and is responsible for performing the mitzvot. .

The Bar Mitzvah ceremony

The Bar Mitzvah ceremony consists of the young person chanting the blessings, and the Torah portion which is the Torah portion of the week. He can read the whole Parasha (the whole portion) or just the Maftir, which is the last section of the week’s portion. One can also read the Haftarah portion. There are many traditions that accompany the Bar / Bat Mitzvah experience. While the actual day is important and memorable, the years of preparation before are just as enlightening and vital. The boy also begins the mitzvah of putting on Tefillin on the week before the Aliya to the Torah.
